SAINT THOMAS MORE

England, 1478-1535

St. Thomas More was a lawyer, statesman, writer, humanist, and staunch defender of the Catholic Church. As King Henry VIII's Lord High Chancellor (1529-32), he could not accept the King's repudiation of the Pope's authority and later, the Act of Succession which validated Henry's second marriage and disputed the Pope's spiritual authority. More was tried for treason and beheaded.

Did you know?

St. Thomas More educated his daughters as well as his sons, which was very unusual in his time. He was a dedicated father. His most famous work, Utopia, gave birth to a genre of fiction.
