SAINT NICHOLAS

Bishop of Myra (Asia Minor)

270 - 343

St. Nicholas is best known for having had compassion on a family who did not have enough money to provide their daughters with dowries, so that they could marry.

He is said to have secretly left money in their home.

He is also known for having slapped Bishop Arius for arguing the heresy that

God the Son was not equal to God the Father, during the Council of Nicea (325 AD)!

Did you know?

The image of a jolly, round man in red became a Western cultural imprint following the Coca-Cola advertising designs of

Haddon Sundblom, but this particular image of the saint was already in the making by popular 20th Century American illustrators.

Visit the St. Nicholas Centre for a wonderful exploration of this saint.

A family tradition....

Children shine their boots the eve of St. Nicholas,

in hopes that St. Nick will leave treats in them in the night!
