SAINT MAXIMILIAN KOLBE
Poland, 1894 - 1941
St. Maximilian Kolbe was baptised Rajmund Kolbe, and was given the religious name Maximilian Maria when he joined the Conventual Franciscan order of friars (1910). He was a missionary in Japan from 1930-1936, then returned to Poland. He was arrested by the Nazis in 1941 for hiding Jews and sent to Auschwitz. When a fellow prisoner was selected to die, along with 9 others, as punishment for the escape of three men from the prison, St. Maximilian offered his life in exchange. Most of the 10 men died of starvation and dehydration; St. Maximilian and the remaining men were injected with carbolic acid and died a painful death.
Did you know?
St. Maximilian shared an intimate relationship with the Blessed Virgin. The saint wrote that she had appeared to him when he was a boy, offering two crowns: one white (for purity) and one red (for martyrdom). He asked for both.
A family tradition...
Prayerfully consider consecrating yourself and your family to the Mother of God. This is one resource to find out how to do that, and what it would mean for you and your loved ones. The Militia of the Immaculata was founded by St. Maximilian!
