SAINT MARY MAGDALENE

Mary Magdalene has, historically, been conflated with Mary of Bethany (Lazarus's sister) and the woman who washed Jesus's feet with her hair (Luke 7: 36). Mary, likely from Magdala (hence, Magdalene) was presumably a wealthy woman and a support to Jesus and his disciples. Jesus had exorcised her of "seven demons" (Mark 16:9). Called "the apostle to the Apostles," she was witness to Jesus's crucifixion and the first to see the Risen Lord.

Did you know?

2016, St. Mary Magdalene's day of commemoration was elevated from an optional memorial to a feast day. The preface to the Mass for this day was changed to identify her as "Apostle to the Apostles."

A family tradition...

After Mass, spend a few minutes in front of your church's crucifixion. Be in Jesus's company, like Mary Magdalene. Or visit a friend who is suffering in some way, to give them the solace of your company.
