SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI

Assisi, Italy
1181-1226

Born into a rich merchant family, St. Francis lived a life of indulgence until 1205 when he is said to have had a vision that redirected his life to God. Renouncing a worldly life and his family ties, he dedicated himself to a life of poverty and preaching. He established the order of the Franciscans, as well as the Order of the Poor Clares (after St. Clare).

Did you know?

St. Francis received the first recorded instance of the Stigmata -- the five wounds of Jesus's crucified body.

A family tradition...

Catholics traditionally would ask their parish priest to bless their animals on this day.
