SAINT MATTHIAS

The 13th Apostle
1 - 80

St. Matthias was elected by the Apostles to replace Judas Iscariot after the latter killed himself. According to the book of the Acts of the Apostles, St. Matthias was a disciple of Jesus from the Lord's baptism until His ascension. His election followed a casting of lots between himself and another respected choice, according to Judaic law for choosing the high priest for the Temple.

Did you know?

The Apostles felt confident that they could choose a new Apostle not directly chosen by Jesus Himself. In this way, they indicate that they understood they had the authority to elect men to what we understand now as the Catholic priesthood.
St. Matthias is depicted with an axe because tradition holds he was beheaded.
