SAINT MARK, EVANGELIST

12 - 68

St. Mark's Gospel is considered the "Roman Gospel" because his intended audience was the Romans. Mark's mother, Mary of Jerusalem, was proprietress of the Upper Room in which the Apostles received the Holy Spirit. Mark travelled with St. Paul and Barnabas and later travelled to Alexandria (Egypt) and is said to have been its first Bishop. He was martyred by the pagans of Alexandria.
