SAINT JOSEPH

Spouse of the Mary, foster father of Jesus

When Mary was betrothed to Joseph, she was already pregnant with the Messiah. Joseph, as the Bible tells us, intended to free Mary from the engagement so as to save her from public shame. But an angel of the Lord told Joseph in a dream about God's plans for Mary, her son, and Joseph himself. He cared for her and the Son of God until his death, which is unrecorded in the Bible. We assume he died before Jesus was 30 years, which was when He began His ministry.

Did you know?

The feast of St. Joseph is also a Solemnity, so if March 19 lands on a Friday, you can enjoy a dispensation from our regular Catholic Friday fasting and abstinence!

Mary has few words recorded in the Gospels, and Joseph has even fewer: In fact, nothing Joseph might have said is quoted in Scripture. And yet God entrusted him with the care of the Immaculate Conception and the Word Incarnate. Although we have none of his words and few of his deeds recorded, there is much we can meditate upon in the man of St. Joseph.
