NATIVTY OF
SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

died c. 30

St. John the Baptist was Jesus's cousin, son of Elizabeth and Zechariah. Jesus said of John that "among those born of women no one is greater than John" (Luke 7: 28). John was a great preacher and prophet who called the children of Israel to repentance, to prepare for the coming of the Messiah, and who baptized his followers in the Jordan River. At Jesus's request, John also baptized the Son of God. Herod, ruler of Galilee, had John beheaded for publicly denouncing his marriage to his own niece.

Did you know?

St. John the Baptist is recalled in the Mass readings of the Second Sunday of Advent because he points to the coming of the Christ in his own time. But he also reminds us that Christ is coming again at the end of time.

A family tradition...

You might not want to eat locusts, but perhaps you may wish to eat honey in honour of this saint!
