HOLY NAME OF THE
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Pope Innocent XI established this feast in 1684 to commemorate the Holy Roman Emperor's successful battle against the Ottoman Empire in Vienna in 1683.

Did you know?

The name "Mary" is understood to mean both "beloved" and "bitter." It is also understood that in Hebrew, Mary means "drop of the sea" (Stilla Maris). Over time, stilla was pronounced and spelled stella, from which Catholics gave her another title, Star of the Sea (Stella Maris).
This optional memorial is paired with the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus.

A family tradition...

Names are very important to Christians. God imbued great significance in the naming of people -- for example, He (re)named Abraham (from Abram), Israel (from Jacob), and Peter (from Simon).
