SAINT CHARLES LWANGA
AND COMPANIONS

Uganda, d. 1886

St. Charles Lwanga was a page in the court of King Mwanga of the late 19th century in modern-day Uganda. He, among other servants in the court, received catechism from the chief steward. The King commanded that the Christians in his court denounce their faith. When a number of catechumens, Catholics, and Anglicans refused, they were executed. Charles was burned to death with some of his companions.

Did you know?

The youngest martyr during these persecutions was a 13 year-old boy. The White Fathers, who were missionaries in the area, were afterwards banned from the country. When they returned following the death of King Mwanga, they discovered hundreds of converts and catechumens in the area.

A family tradition...

Pray for missionaries currently in the world, especially those bringing the Gospel to areas that are hostile to Christians.
