SAINT BLAISE

Ancient Armenia (Turkey)

d.316

St. Blaise was a physician before he was elected a Bishop because of his reputation for holiness and miraculous healings.

He was an outspoken Bishop but retired, eventually, to a cave (presumably to elude governmental capture) where he continued to be sought out for healings, physical and spiritual.

By order of the Roman Emperor of the time, the local governor persecuted Christians. St. Blaise, who refused to deny his faith, was arrested, tortured, and beheaded.

It is said that, on his way to his death, St. Blaise cured a child who was choking.

A family tradition...

On the feast of St. Blaise, attend Mass to receive the traditional throat blessing by candles (which are blessed by a priest on the Feast of the Presentation).
