ST. BARNABAS, APOSTLE

d. 60

St. Barnabas was a Jew from Cyprus who had adopted a Greek lifestyle. He became an apostle after he sold his possessions and donated the proceedings to the Jerusalem Christian community. St. Barnabas vouched for Saul when the Christian community continued to mistrust him. St. Barnabas went on mission with St. Paul as his helper to establish the church in Antioch. It is assumed that he was martyred.

Did you know?

Barnabas was originally named Joseph, but his name was changed after his conversion. "Barnabas" means "son of encouragement."
