ASSUMPTON OF THE
BLESSED VIRGIN

The Assumption of Mary is one of four Marian dogmas of the Catholic Church. In 1950, Pope Pius XII declared the dogma, writing that Mary, "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory." Since Mary was conceived without Original Sin, we believe she was spared the experience of death.

Did you know?

The Church faithful since the 4th century, at least, were concerned about the nature of Mary's passing from this world into heaven. The Virgin's Assumption into heaven was a matter of common belief for centuries but only became official Church teaching in 1950 in response to a Church-wide request that the Church declare it as truth.
