SAINT ANTHONY OF PADUA

Lisbon, Portugal 1195-1231

St. Anthony, baptized Fernando by his prominent family, in Lisbon, joined the Franciscans after witnessing a procession of the bodies of Franciscan martyrs (killed in Morocco). He preached widely around France and Italy, and was known for his deep theological insights. He knew St. Francis Assisi and was declared a saint the year after he died, at the age of 36 (of illness).
