SAINT LUCY

Sicily, Italy

c.304

St. Lucy was a young girl who decided to consecrate her life to God and remain a virgin. A pagan suitor was angered when she rejected him and he exposed her as a Christian (during a time when Christians were persecuted).

According to tradition, she was miraculously saved from the fire that was intended to burn her; she had her eyes taken out; and died when a sword was thrust into her throat.

St. Lucy, among seven other holy women, is commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass.
